Tippy Payne Memorial – The Good Citizen Award

The Upperville Horse Show pay tribute to Barbara “Tippy” Payne with a special memorial presentation each year. The professional staff in the hunter office, who have worked with Tippy for many years, will choose the person who exhibits the cheerful – smiling – friendly – kind attitude, like Tippy.

It seems that she was as much a part of the horse show as the ancient oaks. Her ever present smile, good humor and helpful attitude greeted generations of horse show visitors and she was never too busy congratulate a winner or to console those not so fortunate.

The artist, Jean Clagett of Atelier West Studio in Upperville, has sculpted a bronze exemplifying two of Tippy’s other great loves: following the Piedmont Fox Hounds across the Virginia countryside aboard her horse Lady Hawke.

The Theodora Ayer Randolph Sporting Scholarship

The Upperville Colt & Horse Show has established a scholarship fund in memory of Mrs. Randolph and the true sporting spirit she represented. This scholarship shall be awarded annually to a deserving young equestrian for the advancement of their knowledge and skills of horses and hunting. The young person will be chose from nominations submitted by leaders of area 4-H groups or Pony Clubs and by Masters of regognized hunts.

The recipient must be an active foxhunter with an interest in various horse sports and must have a desire to improve their horsemanship and horsemastership. Acceptable uses of the scholarship proceeds include payment of hunting dues, riding lessons, entry fees, tuition for educational programs and other related activities.

The Scholarship Committee hopes to help a young person grow into a true horseman ― an all around horseman. Mrs. Randolph helped many young horsemen grow and reach their full potential. Through this program, the Upperville Colt & Horse Show hopes to continue this spirit.

The Presidents’ Trophy

The Presidents’ Trophy is awarded to the individual who exemplifies singular dedication to the community and to the preservation of the Upperville Colt & Horse Show.

The inagural recipent of the The Presidents’ Trophy was Dr. Betsee Parker of Middleburg, and the 2021 recipient was Mildred Fletcher Slater of Upperville. In 2022, Show President Joe Fargis awarded the honor to Tommy Lee and Diane Jones.

The Presidents’ Trophy is a bronze sculpture created by Wendy Lind, and is based on her horse Zorro. Wendy grew up in Ireland and has called Middleburg home for 20 years. She is an active equestrian with an extensive background in art and design.

The Russell K. Frey Memorial Trophy

Presented by Lydia Frey in honor of her father, Russell K. Frey, this award will be bestowed upon a rider who demonstrates impeccable riding style, demonstrated horsemanship and a sense of humor in the USHJA International Hunter Derby. The award winner will be chosen by a panel of judges selected by Lydia.
